The Dangers of drug abuse to Nigerian Youths — My Personal Experience.

I will never forget the first day I smoked ‘Colorado’ or ‘Kolo’ (As it is popularly called in Nigeria). The memory is still fresh on my mind even though it happened almost five months ago. At the time, my car had developed some mechanical problems with the engine and was towed to a nearby mechanic workshop. Due to the issues with my car, I had to spend the night at a friends place on the island because I could not go back home.

That night at my friends place, we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood, get food and smoke before we finally retire for the night. I have been smoking different strains of marijuana like Arizona, loud, and SK as they are popularly called in Nigeria. But I was yet to try the new strain called ‘Colorado’ mainly because of the terrible things I heard about this particular strain.

COLORADO’ IS A STREET NAME FOR SYNTHETIC CANNABINOID, AND IS CLASSIFIED AS PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCE. IT’S ALSO KNOWN AS ‘BLACK MAMBA,’ ‘AMSTERDAM GOLD,’ ‘DEVIL’S WEED,’ ‘X,’ ‘MARY JOY,’ ‘ANNIHILATION,’ ‘TAI HIGH’ AND ‘HAWAIIAN HAZE.’

This particular night was different. My friend had come to love the feel ‘Colorado’ gave him. I still preferred to use what I was comfortable with but he asked me to try ‘Colorado’ it as it was no different from the other strains. I thought about it and decided to give it a shot. We were about four of us sitting together and the smoke was going round. When it got to me, I took a puff and passed it but my friend was like

‘Come on, that’s just one puff. It would not make you feel anything. Take two more puffs and drag it in so it circulates in your system’

Those were his exact words. I did as he asked since he had been using it for a while. I dragged the smoke and eventually everything changed. I felt as though I was in a trance. I had been transported to an unknown land and it was strange. I felt as though I was in a desert, I did not know anyone, as a matter of fact, I felt I was already ‘mad’. I started walking away from my friend toward another destination. I was trying to cross the road when my friend came up to me and asked where I was going.

At this point, I could not recognize him anymore. To me, he was just another mad man stuck in the unknown desert land. I saw dreadlocks on his head even though he had no dreads. I felt thirsty, disoriented and my hands were shaking. I felt as though I had no money, friends or relatives who I could call for help. It wasn’t not a good feeling at all. I kept asking my friend who he was and this shocked him. Apparently he was still in his right mind so he took control of the situation and asked me to come with him.

How I regained my senses

While the argument between me and my friend was going on, I told him I was very thirsty and needed something to drink. He asked if I had any money with me. I told him no meanwhile I had five thousand naira in my wallet and more in my account but I could not remember any of this. My friend took me to a nearby store and suddenly I remembered the face of the store owner. Immediately, hope was restored. I knew I could buy a drink on credit since I knew the owner of the store. I got to the store and asked the owner to give me one plastic Pepsi drink that I would give him the money later and he obliged. After, I had the drink, I felt so much better. My head was calm and I began to see more clearly. The drink made a lot of difference and I could also recognize my friend. I realized I had more than enough money to pay for the drink I bought and phone to call family members. The environment felt more familiar and I began to know myself. When everything was clear again, it felt as though my fears had been affirmed giving me more reasons to steer clear of this particular strain of marijuana.

Health Tips

This tip is as a result of my personal experience. If you are using any strain of marijuana, always have water or any other soft drink by your side. It’s always helpful.

Reason for this post

I wrote this post because of all the terrible experiences people have had with this drug and to create awareness since I have also had the same experience first hand. More so, I saw a video about a young man who took this drug and I wanted to share it you.
